How long does a translation take?

A common question you hear from the clients is “How long will it take?” Below is my guide regarding the professional human translation times:

Frequent question from clients during the COVID-19 outbreak

QUESTION: How can I receive my certified translation?

ANSWER:

During these challenging and uncertain times, I aim to respond to your needs as better as possible.

One of the best ways to receive your certified translation is by sending you a certified electronic translation.

It could be a scanned, certified translation or a digitally-signed PDF, whichever suits you better. As required by the UK government, it will also carry my self-certifying statement (stating that it’s a ‘true and accurate translation of the original document’), contact details, date, signature, and seal.

Many UK authorities accept certified electronic translations, particularly as they need to be submitted electronically as part of an online application process if you are applying for settled status, citizenship, etc.

Traducciones certificadas en el Reino Unido

Estando en el Reino Unido, llegará el momento en el que tengas que traducir tu partida de nacimiento, certificado de antecedentes penales, acta de matrimonio, tu diploma universitario o certificado de estudios.

En Argentina, generalmente uno contacta al Colegio de Traductores, para obtener información sobre traductores matriculados. En el Reino Unido los requisitos son diferentes para la traducción de documentos oficiales.

No existe la figura del “traductor público”. La profesión no está regulada.
Los organismos gubernamentales estipulan que las traducciones sean certificadas.

¿Cuál sería la diferencia entonces? La diferencia radica en que el traductor debe ser miembro del Chartered Institute of Linguists (CIOL) o del Institute of Translation and Interpreting (ITI). Demás organismos profesionales o académicos siguen las mismas pautas para la presentación de traducciones.

Las traducciones públicas o “juradas” son aquéllas donde se necesita que un notario acredite la identidad del traductor, sin intervenir en el contenido de la traducción, ejerciendo el mismo rol que el del Colegio de Traductores en Argentina, por ejemplo.

En cuanto al formato, no es obligatorio, pero generalmente se espera que la traducción guarde el mismo diseño del documento original, mientras que, en Argentina, por ejemplo, el formato es diferente, en papel romaní y no se permiten espacios en blanco.

Cuando necesites traducir tu documentación en el Reino Unido, es importante que verifiques las credenciales del traductor y que sea miembro de CIOL. El traductor deberá adjuntar la certificación a la traducción, en la cual estipulará su número de membresía, sello y firma.

“Andrea graduated in 1996 as a sworn translator in Buenos Aires. Immediately after graduation, she started working as an in-house translator for Accenture Argentina, and then the Embassy of the State of Kuwait while also being a freelancer. One of her passions is swimming and used to participate in open-water competitions while in Argentina; this is when she specialised in lifesaving techniques and acted as an interpreter in two International Life Saving Congresses organised in Argentina by EPSA and the ILS.
Andrea fell in love with an Englishman and set down roots in the United Kingdom, and started working for J.P. Morgan until the family began travelling due to her husband's job in 2011. She lived in France, Switzerland, and Spain. Once back in the UK, Andrea became a freelancer and is certified by the Chartered Institute of Linguists in London since 2019. She is involved in localisation, transcription, subtitling, and proofreading projects.
When she is not translating, she keeps herself busy running after her 8-year old son and 2-year old Weimaraner!”

The British Council, in partnership with BFI Flare: London LGBTIQ + Film Festival, makes five LGBTIQ+ themed short films available for the world to watch online for free, over an 11-day period each year. 2020's films were live from 18 - 29 March.
